Rare are the opportunities for me to participate in my sons

Rare are the opportunities for me to participate in my sons’ sartorial choices — or, for that matter, in my daughter’s. I do not have an “eye.” I cannot throw together incongruous items from my closet to create a stunning ensemble. And I missed the memo on how to properly accessorize.

Truthfully, I can’t even claim a signature style, though I’d like to think that I’ve improved my fashion sense over time.

So it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I accompanied my two youngest sons to shop for enough office attire to tide them over until they could afford their own.

One was starting his first grown-up job in New York as a CPA and the other an actuarial student internship with a ginormous insurance company (brag, brag), which meant they needed adult clothes beyond the standard job interview outfit. The suiting of choice for Florida college students, namely T-shirts, mesh shorts and sneakers, won’t do in the brave new world of finance.

But once we finished purchasing the blindingly bright-colored shirts and the slim-fit slacks, the good leather belts and the plain black slip-ons, their interest fell on what I would consider the most pedestrian of all frills: socks.

My boys, 23 and 21, are into hosiery, the flashy, sassy kind. Tangerine orange and pistachio green and lemon yellow. Striped and cubed and plaid. Chevroned and squiggly-lined. With tiny beer mugs and Marvel comic superheroes. With works of art and motivational logos.

It was hard to reconcile these young men to the boys who, not so long ago, wore only black Nike socks. I bought those by the dozens for my four sons.

I was reminded of that shopping experience just this week when I heard on the news that Dwayne Wade, fabulous guard for my hometown Miami Heat, has teamed up with the sock company Stance for the third installment of The Wade Collection. Holiday 2014 will showcase 18 styles of casual socks, gentlemen’s socks and, a new addition, kids’ socks.

The eight themes featured in the collection include “The Classic Stance,” inspired by Wade’s love of boxing, and — as a shoutout to my beloved 305 area code — “Weather Report,” focused on Miami’s tropical weather, and “What Is Art,” influenced by Miami’s funky Wynwood Art District.

Socks, I come to find out, are the new ties. In offices where everyone pretty much dresses the same, hosiery is how you stand out, how you express yourself.

Today’s statement socks don’t come cheap, though. While the Wades range from a reasonable $10 to $14 a pair, I found some on the Web priced for three figures. And here I thought Gold Toes were a splurge! (Half a dozen pairs is what I got my husband for our anniversary, by the way. He’s making me a sofa table. We are the ultimate power couple, huh.)

Socks are so popular, such a must-have item for the urban male, that some industry professionals point to men’s footsies as the economic engine behind the boom in men’s fashions. Sock sales grew by 2 percent in the past year, outperforming other apparel sectors. Analysts with the market research firm NPD Groups calls this trend “a move from commodity to fashion piece.”

Well, OK, I get it. Socks as foot garments. Socks as accessories. Socks as lingerie and bling. But just one question, please:

Does that mean the new fashion faves will remain forever paired, never to mysteriously disappear in the wash?

Eco-friendly ideas for awesome halloween crafts

Eco-friendly ideas for awesome halloween crafts
Just like when watching a horror movie has you glued to the edge of your seat waiting for the next scream-worthy moment, the anticipation of a happily haunted evening is a big part of the Halloween fun. If you really want to stir up the holiday spirit, get crafty and try your hand at some easy DIY to decorate your home, outside and in. (The projects we suggest are both kid- and eco-friendly, to boot.) These Halloween crafts all use commonly available materials that you may well already have around your haunted house.

Pumpkins

When pumpkins are dressed up in no-carve styles, you can repurpose their guts once Halloween is done. (Keep your jack-o-lanterns inside during the day if you live in Florida where its still hot; otherwise they will deteriorate in the Miami heat.) The seeds are great oven roasted and the flesh makes a tasty soup to warm the soul on November nights. Or upcycle old plastic pumpkins with fresh new disguises.

Dig up exciting embellishments out of your craft supply cupboard to turn your pumpkin ghoulish or glamorous. Think felt facial features and fake hair, sinister masks, odds and ends of leftover paint, buttons, glitter, or fake flowers you name it. You can even raid the medicine chest for inspiration. Why not wrap your gourd in gauze bandages for a mummified effect?

If you dread facing Halloween without carving a pumpkin, choose a small size for less waste. Then chop up the remains and toss on your compost heap after the big night.

Mason Jars

Place somber black tea lights inside a batch of mason jars to spookify the dcor at your Halloween monster mash. Make sure they are safely out of the way of rowdy revelers.

Alternatively, use mason jars as containers for party treats, either seasonal (traditional candy corn, for example) or spooky (like gummy worms or green Jell-O slime). Stick on scary removable labels describing the contents in gruesome terms, and be sure to save the jars for repurposing next year.

Wreath

You might just want to add a Halloween-y trick or two like miniature plastic skulls or pompom spiders to a regular green wreath. But why not go the whole six feet er, nine yards by making the entire circlet out of spooky stuff? Personally we would prefer to replace the greenery with a salvaged bundle of bare black branches, garnished vampire bats, fashioned from old newspaper.

Rocks

Make cheap and easy outdoor decorations using rocks. This ones simple enough for even a preschooler to handle, but can be eerily artistic in the hands of an older child. Collect good-sized stones in your garden and paint frightening faces (or just devilish-looking eyes) on them. Glow-in-the-dark paint will give a boo-tiful special effect when you go outside for a midnight stroll if you dare, that is.

Fabric

Fabric is wonderful for transforming homey into horrible spreading it in suitable spots around the house takes just minutes and it can simply be refolded and replaced in your sewing stash after use. White or gray gauze gives a ghostly feel when it swathes furniture and large house plants or just hangs in a doorway, blowing in the breeze. For more drama, drape windows with dark fabric to block out exterior illumination, after hooking up a haunted flicker light adapter.

No third Flight of the Conchords

No third Flight of the Conchords
There won't be a threesome after all.
Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement has scotched reports he and co-star Bret McKenzie are working on a third series for US network HBO.
Clement had given an interview with The Guardian Australia this week in which he appeared to let slip that HBO had commissioned a new four-episode show.
However, the next day he took to Twitter to douse fans' hopes.
"Before this rumour gets out of hand - we are not working on a 4 ep Conchords show for hbo...
"I am working on another idea with them though, hence the mix-up."

Is Maddie & Tae’s Girl In A Country Song a successful gender flip or fail?

Is Maddie & Tae’s Girl In A Country Song a successful gender flip or fail?
Music video trends come and go: once upon a time it was all about the sweeping, Michael Bay-esque crane shots (Will Smith’s Miami, we hardly knew ye), then the well-
timed celebrity cameo (do you think Ben Stiller wonders whether Bad Boys For Life hurt his Walter Mitty Oscar chances?). And lest we forget the brief, mind-melting era
when everyone wanted an Eric Wareheim Techincolor nightmare-fuel vid.
Evidently in mid-2014, the music video trend du jour is to play fast and loose with a bit of gender role reversal. You know, instead of armies of video vixens, female
artists are surrounded by Calvin Klein-poster-lookin’ hunks: think J-Lo’s I Luh Ya Papi, and now country artists Maddie & Tae’s Girl In A Country Song, in which the
duo literally flip an industrial switch labelled “ROLE REVERSAL” before dudes kitted out in Daisy Dukes flood the screen.
Girl in a Country Song gif
Well, it’s a trend if you take Amanda Hess’ latest XX Factor column for Slate at face value - and doing so would also require you to believe that gender role
reversals in music videos do nothing to dismantle the objectification of female artists.
In the piece, Hess argues that little is solved by Country Song, because, “Maddie & Tae’s role reversal switch only works on one gender. The objectified women from
the first shot don’t get a masculine wardrobe change; throughout the video, they’re filmed pushing out their butts as they play at farming and making eyes at the
camera as they writhe on a tree swing. Meanwhile, the gender-flipped guys are styled and directed to appear purposely ridiculous, not actually sexy.”
It’s true, the women don’t get a wardrobe change, but I have a different reading, which is that their continued presence alongside the sexy outfits of the dudes
works precisely because it illustrates that the notion of “girl[s] in a country song” is as “ridiculous” as the farmer dudes wearing crop-tops and cut-offs. The
viewer has to read the dudes’ presence as silly in order to understand the point of the song and video; if it’s dumb to have a half-dressed farmer dude making out
with a strawberry, it’s just as stupid for a woman to do it.
